Welcome!

Memorial Day weekend is often considered the start of summer, at least in the U.S. Many people kick off their summer with a trip or vacation, even if it’s just for a long weekend.

This year I’m using this weekend to kick off a new blog. It’s called The Occasional Sightseer. I plan to post about places to go and sights to see both near and far – some on day trips, some on a weekend get away and some for longer excursions of a week or more.

About Me

I’ve always been a traveler, wanderer and sightseer. I’m very fortunate. When I was growing up my parents always loaded the five of us up into the family sedan and took off for places too wonderful to imagine. We were introduced to natural wonders, big cities and Mickey Mouse. Also, unusual things like a Corn Palace, Paul Bunyan, gators and dolphins, beaches, mountains and everything in between. In later years I’ve continued those travels and I’ve spent quite a bit of time in all 50 states while living in 6 of them. I’ve also visited more than 15 other countries. In a previous career I was a Park Ranger with the National Park Service. While doing that I had the opportunity to work either long term, or on temporary assignments, in more than 15 National Park units.

Sightseeing Now?

Its a gross understatement to say that we are currently living in unusual times as a pandemic grips the world along with our thoughts and actions. People have been staying home to try to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus. But almost everyone is also longing to be able to safely get out and see and visit sights near and far. In this space I’ll share with you places where I’ve gone to sight see. I’ll include places I’m visiting now and also some of my favorite places from the past.

Along the Way

Our home is in the Fredericksburg, Virginia area. We are blessed to have a small second home on the Outer Banks of North Carolina where we also spend a lot of time. We tend to travel frequently to other places within the Mid-Atlantic area. I’ll be sharing with you some of our favorite spots, things to do, places to eat and other fun things we discover. We also take other, longer trips as well and I’ll enjoy sharing those with you too.
